چکیده

Sublethal disturbance may lead to behavioral modifications that have detrimental consequences for the individual. Sublethal disturbance is an indirect effect of fishing that has seldom been examined. In summer 2003, we conducted surveys on the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus in the Florida Keys, USA, before and after a 2 d mini-season exclusively for recreational sportdivers to assess the frequency of injured lobsters. We also conducted (1) a tethering experiment to assess the influence of disturbance and injury on predation-induced mortality, and (2) Y-maze laboratory experiments to assess the effect of injury and disturbance on the shelter choice of conspecifics. Injury surveys revealed an immediate increase (to 27.16%) in the percentage of injured lobsters from preto post mini-season within patch reef habitats, but only a small increase in injured lobsters amongst patch head habitats. Tethering trials revealed that injured lobsters were more likely to succumb to predation than uninjured controls, while the shelter choice experiments demonstrated that the usual ability to attract conspecifics was altered by injury. Considering the ability of this fishery to unintentionally injure >25% of the lobster population in patch reef habitats in just 2 d, the potential population consequences to spiny lobsters must be examined.

The non-extractive economic value of spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, in the Turks and Caicos Islands

Increases in spiny lobster size and abundance have been observed within some marine protected areas (MPAs). To date, the potential economic benefits of these changes have been assumed to derive from the effects of emigration of adult lobster to adjacent fishing grounds and/or increased larval export to downstream nurseries that sustain fisheries. According to economic theory, these effects may ...

Detection of Panulirus argus Virus 1 (PaV1) in exported frozen tails of subadult-adult Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus.

The Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus is a valuable fishing resource and the trade in frozen lobster tails is an important industry. However, the presence of the pathogenic virus Panulirus argus Virus 1 (PaV1), which causes systemic infection in P. argus and is particularly lethal to juvenile individuals, has not been previously examined in imported/exported lobster products. We used PCR ...

The occurrence of the provisional Brazilian subspecies of spiny lobster (Panulirus argus westonii) in Florida waters*

The Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, is distributed from Brazil throughout the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico to approximately North Carolina and Bermuda (Holthius, 1991). It supports major commercial fi sheries in Florida, the Caribbean and Brazil. Commercially, P. argus is especially important to the state of Florida, where the spiny lobster fi shery ranks second only to shrimp in ...

Neurolipofuscin is a Measure of Age in the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus argus, in Florida

Accurate age estimates for the commerciallyimportant Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, would greatly enhance analyses of life history and population dynamics. Previous estimates of their age based on size and growth may be inaccurate because of variable growth in the wild. An established technique for aging crustaceans – histologically-determined lipofuscin content in the nervous system...
